My love letter to one of gaming's earliest consoles. I wanted to see if NES-style visuals were possible, and after a bit I made a bunch of emulator tweaks to both showcase the raw visual potential of the consoles while making it a worth while and intriguing game to play without straying too far from the source Atari experience.

These sorts of titles require you to jot down notes, draw maps. but that's something that can be done automatically.

A classic mode exists if you want that experience, but for 2026 quality audio and visual guides; enhanced mode's the way to go.

A real Atari 2600 RPG. Not "retro-styled".
SWORDS OF TIME is an actual 64K cartridge ROM, written in 6502 assembly, that runs on a real Atari 2600 or any 2600 emulator. A full turn-based RPG at the scale of Dragon Quest: eight regions to cross, a town, a fen, a barrow, an old wall and what waits past it, shops, spells, six kinds of enemy, and one hundred years of grey light to undo.

A century ago the Ember — the first hearth-fire of Ashfen — was carried off north on a bier of black glass. The fields have been forgetting themselves ever since. Three travellers take the road after it: the Blade, the Hand, and the Ash.

Two ways to play

DEFINITIVE EDITION — the game exactly as envisioned. The cartridge runs untouched, and a "sidegrade" player builds the 1979 living room around it, using only things the ROM itself announces:

  • The feels in hand. NPCs say "TURN TO PAGE 5" — and the actual 24-page instruction booklet leans up from the bottom of the screen, open to the right page. Flip it, print it, or read the full staged dialogue in a modern overlay, beat by beat.
  • Maps that draw themselves. The booklet ships with blank charts. As you walk, your route is inked in by hand; trees, graves, reeds and roads... on the corner map and the printed pages alike.
  • A party with faces. Choose three portraits for your company; in battle they stand beside the screen, shake and bleed when struck, and fall when they fall.
  • Battles zoom the set in. Every step nudges the cabinet. Save states remember everything, including your charts. A soundtrack plays over the TIA's own voice, and a victory fanfare when you've earned one.

CLASSIC EDITION — the ROM with no alterations. No overlays, no music, no help but the booklet on the table beside you. Exactly what 1979 shipped.
